well i did it
not in the way i was planning to do i just couldn't bring myself to break her neck i had her on my lap covered in a black bath towel to keep her warm and quite (she was anyway poor thing) i kept getting myself in position but i found her neck thicker than what i thought they where and i was scared i didn't have the strength, so i did it another way please don't be angry but i hit her hard over the head with a heavy spade, she was still under the towel and i was behind her so she wouldn't have had a clue but whats bothering my is when i did it the movement under the towel was a lot, i know i must have knocked her out even if i hadn't killed her as it was an almighty blow i made sure she was dead, it took my nearly an hour to bring myself to do this i just hope the neighbours didn't see!
when she was dead i tried pulling her head to see how hard it would have been and for me the spade was the only way, i am going to look today for proper tools that will do this as i never want to do that again i feel barbaric

Not the ideal way to go about it Hermon, but with that force, she probs was dead.  the movement you saw was the nerves still twitching that's all.

Dispatching tools are best.  My OH has a proper electric stunner, but hand ones can be found in lots of places.  Look at this one!

I really feel for you Hermon but don't stress over the poor bird you dispatched.  You did your very best by her and from your description I'm certain she went immediately, so there was no suffering.  You sound like a very caring chook keeper to me  :D  :D

hermon, please don't beat yourself up over this, you did the right thing for her and that's what's important.
i know i wouldn't be able to do that, which was why i'd said about taking her to the vet.

I had my Gerty dispatched by a vet but it was quite expensive  :(

This company have some good wall mounted ones which look easier to use than a hand held one.
