Strawberries, when to plant?
« on: November 14, 2007, 16:25 »
I've decided to grow strawberries on one of the beds in my allotment. I'm going to buy a pack of three different plant types from Sutton seeds.

Is it best to order them now and plant them out, order them now, repot and overwinter in a cold frame or wait 'til Feb/March and order them then ready to plant in thir final positions.

I'm from the proper North West of England, ie 12 miles from the Border so it gets quite cold here.

i've got a load in pots - and i'm going to wait til spring to plant them

depending on their size - and weather - i'd be tempted to overwinter in a cold frame

here in the south - i just pack them into a wooden frame - so they are tightly packed - and fill any gaps with ash - just to keep them nice and snug

don't let them dry out too much - but be careful of your watering too - as you wouldn't want little ones to freeze

I ordered them last year in October from a supplier and I did not get them until February.  Have you thought about trying ebay ?

I am not an expert with strawberries or anything garden related.

But I find that 95% of my strawberries in the ground get eaten by something but in pots (on the patio) 5% get damaged.  You may find the same.

Sorry yes the fruit.  The plants seem ok but the fruit gets eaten before I can eat it.

I agree, slug proofing is easier with pots or other raised growing containers, also, home garden environment is trickier.
