Hi

I've now done my very first digging at the allotment. The digging was great but most of the time was spent weeding - mostly couch grass roots...(btw Am I right not to put these roots in the compost?)

I'm looking to plant garlic sets - firstly am i right to do that now and secondly can anybody recommend where to buy them?- I've been to four garden centres this weekend but all I can find are blinking Christmas decorations ....

Thanks....

Sorry can’t help with the garlic apart suggesting seed catalogues, but I always burn any couch grass.

Drowning couch grass roots in a barrel is easier at this time of year. Makes good liquid feed too.  STrangely enough, I recommend porcelain garlic.

You can plant after October.  I'll still be planting into December I think

Get yer garlic from Tucker's Seeds. Great range, great prices.
I can vouch for the Purple Heritage,it has a lovely full flavour.

You can plant anytime from now until springtime as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. They will root readily even in cold soil.

Went over to the lottie for a few hours digging on Sunday. Very excited to see that the Garlic has started to shoot ! Excellent news as it's our first thing planted and we're seeing something happen already.

Garlic can still be planted but IMO you did well to avoid the elephant garlic - very bland.
