'Rudolph' Sprouting Purple Broccoli
« on: July 11, 2012, 23:03 »
It said on the seeds' package that it will take 40 weeks to crop. but mine which were planted out in late April, are starting to show their purple head (broccoli) now. Was that caused by the cool & wet weather? would I still be able to start harvest the top head and force the sprouts come out from sides? they grow like mad and are now 4 feet tall with massive leaves.
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

Yes, if they're ready - pick them. The side shoots will come a bit later ;)

The Sutton seed packet says "sow May to July". Why did you sow your seeds in March?

I will not plant my Rudolph out for another week or so. I expect them to produce heads in January/February.

I will not plant my Rudolph out for another week or so. I expect them to produce heads in January/February.

my package said, sow in April-May in seed bed and plant out in June-July. I have no seed bed so I just sow direct in soil at end of April (I only bought them in middle of April), it says I can harvest in September-December and can harvest as late as Jan-Feb.

I will use them if they come earlier than usual. just fell it is strange for the to grow so fast. maybe they thought the weather is like September or October already?
