Plum tomato question
« on: July 05, 2012, 15:30 »
I am growning a Roma plum tomato for the first time.  It is in a growbag with a couple of Shirley toms.  I have just got back from hols and the plum tom seems to have two main stems.  I have sorted out my other tomatoes but not sure what to do with the plum.  Is it supposed to be more of a spreading type than growing upwards.  It doesn't look anything like the others.

I don't want to start attacking it with the secateurs until I know what its supposed to look like.

Having grown them before, but certainly not an expert, I think they are a bush variety which you don't have to snip side-shoots off until they get out of hand and the fruit won't set if it's later in the year. Best to snip and get bigger fruit than a lot of small ones. They are good for sauces, but also good in meals and sandwiches.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks for this, I will have a look and see how it is going and whether to snip or not!

I grow Roma in a bed outside. They are bush and I've never attempted to control them very much. I just surround the bed with a frame of canes for them to lean against, and if a truss gets heavy I tie it to a cane to support it. But they can turn into quite big and unruly bushes, so if you've got restricted space you might need to trim it a bit.

I have 4 in the greenhouse and they are very healthy looking but very dense, so I'll be having a snip or 2 soon.

I grow plum toms every year and never snip off heading shoots. They are a bush, as said, and will try to keep bushing out. If you leave them, you will get loads more toms.
