Re moult
I'm pretty sure Hillfooter has info on inducing a moult, might be worth sending him a PM
And apologies HF if I've got this wrong.

sorry kegs but after reading up more yours does seem to be EDS and there is no cure for it according to all the sites that I have looked at  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Are the egg whites watery (a finding in IB)

for an induced moult in hens that have a persistent soft shell problem HF recommended 36 hour starvation (no more), but as your soft shell and shell less problem has spread then I doubt that it will solve your problem.

You're all being so helpful, thank you.

Joyfull - what a brilliantly useful web site.  I've bookmarked it.

We've only had 2 of the wrinkled shell eggs but not only is it wrinkled it should also be brown.  We haven't had a usable egg for quite a while now but when we did the whites were normal.

If they only looked peaky I wouldn't feel so bad.  My continued concern is that if it's EDS I might walk droppings into the other run and if it's IB which is airborne, the runs are too close to each other.

Bum.   >:( :(

get some of those plastic covers to over your shoes when you walk into the infected run and dispose of them immediately after you come out (ideally by burning), until you decide what you are going to do (although culling does seem to be the only real option if it is confirmed to be EDS  :().

Gave me a laugh though so thank you.  I was actually working out where I'd pour it on the grass between runs !   :nowink:

I'm monitoring them for a few more days.  Since I posted I had one perfect egg which I think is from the one layer that was in semi-moult but apparently chickens can be immune from EDS.  The other 3 have produced nothing.  I'm giving them mash in the mornings with cod liver oil and Limestone flour to see if that does anything, and being extra careful with hygiene.

I can't cull them immediately because they were a birthday present to my son and to say he was upset when I explained the situation on the phone is an understatement so I promised him I wouldn't do anything until we talked about it some more when he gets home this weekend.

Thanks for asking.
