Do you mean in an aviary rather than a coop ?

 Never something that had or would cross my mind!
I wouldnt put my canaries in with the hens.......my hens would eat them!!   (they currently chase 2 doves around the garden as it is!) :D

Would be interested to hear others views
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries

Although I have not done it I have seen foreign finches housed with small Chinese painted quail but huge, big chickens and canaries?  I'm very doubtful it would work for long.

I've got a 10 week old chick in our quail house at the moment with a couple of aviary birds and there hasnt been any trouble with any of them. The aviary birds come down and try and pinch the food until they realise the size of the pellets.

You would have to consider the chance of escape for the canaries, my chick and quails like to hang around the doorway and sometimes it's a obsticle course getting over them whilst trying to pull the door shut behind you. you would probably need to put an inner doorway in to prevent escape

I havent kept canaries so i dont know if they come down onto the aviary floor for any reason, that would be something you would need to consider with the poop.

My chick has a wonderful temperament and doesnt give chase to any of them, but that doesnt mean when its fully grown it wont. I think it would depend on the chickens. I've had chickens that chase off wood pigeons and neighbours cats, and squirrels, the ones i have at the moment dont give chase to anything which is why the pigeons are stealing their food.

In theory the chickens live on the lower level and the canaries would live above

Don't know if it's relevant, but our chooks are quite happy to share space and food with sparrows, robins, wrens and other small birds. They chase away crows.
