What do tall potato stalks signify?
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:16 »
This is my second year as an allotment holder. Last year I got an excellent crop of potatoes although some were spoiled by wireworm. This year, my crop has gone mad! The stalks of my Kerr's Pinks and King Edwards are very tall indeed - almost four feet. They are not spindly but full and bushy with plenty of flowers. This week, I dug up some of my earlies ( Foremost) and they were a good size with an excellent flavour. My plot is in Enfield on the outskirts of London and we have had lots of rain but perhaps not the very cold temps as in other parts of the country. My plot is sheltered and I dug in lots of compost and changed the planting position from last year. Can I expect a good crop - or do the tall stems signify doom and gloom?

The height is a response to weather and feeding...it doesn't mean you have a good crop - or a bad one.
You won't know til you dig them up  :D
