Looking for potato sacks
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:10 »
A well known garden supplies company is offering hessian potato sacks at £9.99 for 10 sacks.

Is this about right? Can I get these cheaper/free?

Alternate methods of storage? I tried those cardboard trays that supermarkets throw out - ok, but there were some that caught the light and went a bit green and one or two went soft and slimy towards end of storage.

Ideas please.

Bird feed suppliers have their peanuts in hessian bags, our market stall used to sell them for 20p now I think it's 50p,or greengrocers for paper bags like m1ckz said.

Thank you. One point I have found is that allotment growers need to be able to check the contents of their potato stores regularly so any kind of sack is impractical as you have to keep tipping out and putting back, which could bruise the spuds.

Suggestion is to use cardboard boxes which you can interlock the flaps to shut out light. Punch a few pencil holes in the sides to let in air but keep light to minimum.

I may try both methods as I have one hessian sack back home.

We got hessian sacks from Amazon.
Also got a metal dustbin which OH put holes in around sides and bottom. Then we put the bin on bricks to keep them off the ground and ensure air circulation.

Then put spuds in hessian sacks and sacks in dustbin to stop the   :mad:mice and rats getting the spuds.

If we used the cardbox box I think we may have a repeat of the rodent problem we had earlier in the year.

I use cardboard boxes, they're easy enough to replace each year.

I use the paper sacks that our cat litter comes in, once the bags empty just shake it out and you have a bag for spuds. since we get through 6-8 bags a week with our horde we always have plenty.
