Ice's ALTERNATIVE PASTRY FOR QUICHES AND FLANS
« on: June 22, 2012, 07:21 »
125g red lentils
1tbsp olive oil
1 onion finely chopped
1 clove garlic ditto
1tbsp tomato puree
50g porridge oats
1tbsp lemon juice
2tsp choppped herbs

Cook the lentils until tender, drain and mash.  Soften the onion in the oil, add garlic and fry for two minutes.  Put all ingredients in a bowl, season and and mix.  If its too wet add more oats, if too dry add some water.  Press it into an 8" flan dish on the bottom and up the sides.  Fill and use as you would a pastry case.

Thanks for posting that argyllie.  I've been using this recipe for over 20 years and I love it.  It's also wheat free, so anyone with an intolerance might like it too. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

Do you need to cook the 'pastry' lining before adding filling?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

It's from the days when I was vegetarian. ::)  The filling shouldn't be too liquid as it will leak a little, just make sure it's packed with veg and not too much eggy, milky mix.

Let me know how it goes if anyone tries it. :)

Does this mean its Gluten free Ice?  I'm making a cheese and leek flan on tuesday for a work lunch and my colleague is on a gluten free diet and I'm not quite sure if oats have gluten in them

That's a very good question sarjane.  I just researched it a bit and it seems that oats do not contain gluten, but unless pure, may contain tiny traces of wheat etc due to the processing method.  So someone with a true allergy such as someone with Coeliac disease ought not to eat any that are not certified as contaminant fee.  Someone with a wheat intolerance would be absolutely fine. :)

Hi.  You can buy Gluten free oats in the supermarkets.  Easy peasy!!  We have two coeliacs in the family and we all love porridge!

I've downloaded this recipe for my GF bloke... can't wait to try it, thanks Ice. ::)

Thanks for your swift replies.  The lunch has been postponed till next week so I'll have time to ask her now  about oats but will give this a go in the week anyway (practice run) as it sounds delicious and such a change from fatty pastry.
