I 've never grown swedes before and was wondering do you have to sow them direct or can I start them off in the greenhouse

You can start them off in modules, but they really don't want to be in the warmth of a greenhouse once they have germinated.

As a northerner I couldn't live without my swedes (although we call them turnips)

I normally sow direct but this year have tried some in modules as mum has suggested. The main reason for this is that I have no room available on the plot and I can hold them back till space is ready.

That's my thinking with the room issue but also have three small children it's easier to plant in modules when I have a couple of min then transplant them later when I have more time to get to the allotment

If it helps --- mine took 15 days to germinate outside.  I was beginning to think nothing was going to happen!!
