Onion advice please!
« on: June 11, 2012, 22:06 »
Hi,

I planted red baron onion sets in April in my raised bed, the raised bed is deep enough to grow onions. They are growing great but most of them have started to fall over. This is my first year on my allotment and I don't no if this is normally happens, my garlic hasn't fallen over!

I was given the onion sets so I'm unsure when you harvest them as well, I have looked on the net and you can pull them up when they are small if you want to.

Should they fall over, have I not planted them deep enough and should I try to pull them up or put some extra compost around them????

Any advice would be welcome!

If you have had weather like ours it is possible that the leaves have been bashed down by the wind and rain

Have a look at one, and if the roots are healthy, leave them in as they will carry on growing

There will not be a bulb forming yet: this is the part of the year when they grow leaves - bulbs start to form after mid year

If you see other plots with large onions, these have grown from autumn planted sets, which are different varieties, not the same as yours

PS Garlic leaves will start to go yellow soon, as they near the time to dig them out
