Onion advice
« on: July 12, 2009, 22:08 »
For the first time I have grown around 50 onion plants from seed.  They are doing well, although perhaps it is a bit late in the season?  They are about 5 inches tall and 0.5 cm wide at the bottom.  Now, what I would like to know, is will they survive being moved from their current position, as they need much more space than they currently have.  To be honest, I did not think they would grow from seed, but it was John Harrison's book that encouraged me to try...any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

Where are they? Can you move them with a rootball? Are they overwintering?

If not...cant you just thin them out? (its a killer I know)

They are currently in a raised bed - but in a smal area (not final home).  I didn't think they would grow so well, so did not plan at all for success.  Not sure what you mean by rootball?  Is there a worry if the roots are disturbed to much?  I don't think they are an overwintering variety, but will check tomorrow.  Thinning is going to the last resort I think. Thanks! ::)
