Am I too late to start leeks
« on: May 17, 2012, 21:41 »
I have forgotten to sow my leeks. I'm so annoyed with myself as they were so successful last year and am still pulling my last years produce. Am I too late to sow now?

I do hope not. I sowed mine today in a cat litter tray, after my first attempt failed.

I got 5 tiny leek seedlings from my first sowing as my seeds were about 6 years old.  So I bought some new ones which I sowed last weekend.

I don't think we will get huge leeks from them, but hopefully we will get quite a nice harvest!

In that case I may well sow some more as this year, trying not to over crowd mine, I sowed quite thinly and now wish I had a few extras to go in when the potatoes are lifted and extra space becomes available.

I sowed mine at least 6 weeks ago outside and they only started showing this week. I had given up on them and was thinking of starting again (or buying plug plants) Hopefully the gradual rise in temperature will start to move things along now  :)

I have some started ages ago, even if you only get them as a small leek they are very tasty. I might chuck some more seed in today.
Thanks
Kris

mine went in about three weeks ago and are just showing. I'd say go for it, the worst you will get is baby leeks (and you would pay a fortune for those in a resturant  :) )

Sounds good to me Aelf & Kris.

Baby leeks on the "hoping for" list.  ;)
