Leeks - is it too late to start off a new tray?
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:23 »
I've just been having a look at my leeks in the cold frame and they look a pathetic lot.   :(  Is it too late to start off another cat litter tray load?

I will be starting off another lot tomorrow (as it will be tipping down with rain so can't get on the lotty) in a 5" pot so they can get roots down without being transplated. 1 inch apart.

I don't expect they will be big ones but better than not having any.

define pathetic?
mine look like blades of very skinny grass. They have been outside from the start so I'm sure once the weather heats up they will take off.
I've no idea if a new batch would catch up but I'd chance it on the basic the weather has been so bizarre most of the plants will have to catch up with where they should be anyway. no harm trying as they have such a long growing time. Maybe plant them straight outside rather then in cold frame.
Grow, dammit, grow.

I have had problems getting leeks to germinate (I had an unheated greenhouse).  We have just bought a heater and lo and behold I have leeks popping up all over the place.  Working on the idea that the seeds know best I would assume that when it's warm enough all those which have found it too cold so far will suddenly decide to wake up, and catch up.  I am no expert but, if you remember that spring was about two weeks behind this year I think it follows that everything will follow suit.  To a certain extent we can force nature to do what we want but, when left to her own devices she knows best.

Heavens, this does sound a bit deep but I am a great believer that watching what nature does can be a good guide

Just to make you feel either better or worse (can't see it being the latter!  :nowink:) here is what my leeks look like today. The camera angle flatters them more than a little; the best of them is about 8" tall!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

My spring onions look like that, my leeks are still only about 3" tall. I'm sure they'll grow a bit soon :)

My leeks are not as far on as yours madcat!   I am about to sew a new batch to see if they do better.   I seem to remember that last year mine were little wimps at around this time but did eventually catch up...  Always worth a try :D

I sowed another lot last weekend. Funnily enough I think the first lot cooked in the cold frame on the bank holiday weekend.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Mine are like very small blades of grass too!  I am going to sow some more (so it isnt too late)  they do take quite a while to get going.  Various views of how far behind we are because of the weather - some say its at least a month.
So persevere.  This gardening lark teaches you patience, which is totally different from the instant society we live in :D :D

Patience????!!!!     Not, so not my strongest suit!   ::)

right, since mine are nothing like as good as Jay's but better than Yabba's, I'll start a new lot off this weekend, and then when this warm spring weather we are promised happens, they will be ready to germinate and rock and roll!!!   :D :D
