Bit late with the leeks.
« on: August 14, 2023, 10:58 »

Good morning gardeners,
quite a bit of rain here in North Wiltshire but looking forward to the forecast sunny weather.

The leeks have just gone in, would they benifit at this early stage from a cloche over them, (Wilko's suet bird food boxes)?

Cheers,  Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I don't think so as they are hardy veg and should survive until late winter. I put mine in June and fed them with BFB then with chicken manure pellets later on. Now gone onto Q4 pellets but others may be able to give you more advice.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Our leeks got trampled by a mad doggie, so I lost most of them...

I bought a tray of seedlings from our GC, and have potted them on for planting out, which should be about now, as long as I can build a dog-proof fence around them...

They're a winter variety, and as it's a bit late, I'll put them in about 5" apart and feed them a bit more than necessary, to make sure!

They shouldn’t really need a cloche unless you’re hoping to bump start them & it’s a tad chilly. To be honest I’d think they’ll double in size in next to no time, I hope so as I only transplanted a 2nd sowing of mine in the other day, they’d been sown 4/5 to a module a fair time since. I think like GG says a good feed won’t come amiss. I have to cover mine with enviromesh as we have the blasted leek moth / thrip that will decimate them otherwise

Half of my leek rows are now roofed over with courgette and squash leaves so will get less than I hoped.  However the post the post has prodded me to give the remaining ones a feed - got chicken manure pellets soaking in a milk container of water

Last year all my leeks went in really late as the first crop were decimated by allium leaf minor. I multi sowed them in early aug and put them out at the end of aug. They were the best crop I’ve grown. Not thick but I had clumps of pristine baby/medium leeks all the way until spring (below zero they were). Super tender and not damaged in anyway. I’ve done the same this year (alongside my now netted main crop).
