sweetcorn advice
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:19 »
Hi,

planted 40-odd sweetcorn 2 weeks ago and about 5 have come up and are doing well, the others - nothing!

Am guessing the problem is the cold weather...so should probably put them somewhere warmer eg airing cupboard, but is it too late? will the seeds have died or will they still germinate if I give them some warmth?

And if they have gone, should I sow some more or get some plants?

Many thanks!

They may still come but if you do decide to do more, try chitting them first.
Put the seeds on damp kitchen paper with more damp kitchen paper on top inside an air tight container, only plant when they start to shoot.
Between 2 & 4 days depending how warm they are.
They will still need to be kept in the warmth and should not be planted out untill mid June unless you give them some protection. ie plastic covered clotch.

At optimum temperatures sweetcorn should be showing in a week, or even less, so if the 5 you have got have only just appeared after 2 weeks they may not have been warm enough, but equally there's still a chance that the others may appear.

If the five did appear after about a week then it's possible the others have perished - have a careful dig with the end of a teaspoon or similar to see whether there are any signs of life.

Plenty of time to sow some more - I sow mine in two batches and the second lot won't be sown for another week.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
