How high does netting need to be for brassicas?
« on: May 13, 2012, 18:05 »
I want to do a row of mixed brassicas, to try out some things I haven't done before, just a couple of each. I want to do a hoop/netting tunnel over it for butterfly protection, but I'm not sure how high I need to make it. It'll be over any or all of Trafalgar Brussels, Ironman calabrese, Cavolo Nero Kale, Triomphant, Autumn Giant and Walcheren cauli, Ormskirk and Samantha cabbage. The row will be about a metre wide.

What height do I need to make the tunnel hoops to make sure I've got enough clearance for all those brassicas?

It should say on the packet how tall they get, then add a bit.

I would say the Trafalgar sprouts are going to be the tallest, so I reckon you need to clear at least 1 metre.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks, DD. I thought the sprouts would likely be the tallest.  There's nothing at all on the packet about how tall they get, just that they are tall.

There's useful!

I've just Googled and a few suppliers say they grow to .75m, so you should be safe with 1m, so that butterflies can't lay their eggs through the net.

Oh well done, I Googled but couldn't find anything saying how tall they were.

It was "height" that made the difference. Strangely enough, that never occurred to me :)

I did a tunnel for winter brassicas (PSB, Sprouts and Kale) that has uprights (scaffold poles and fencing stakes) to about 1m then blue hoops in semicircles above, giving a total height of about 1.5m...and the PSB and Sprouts are/were touching the top.
