Egg thief
« on: May 09, 2012, 20:59 »
I thought that one of the hens had started to eat eggs but I was wrong, there's an egg thief in the garden!
after locking the suspected cannibal (poor old Blossom) up all day, I returned to find no eggs in any of the usual places and even the pot eggs in the new nest box had disappeared. Could this be a squirrel or a crow?
Any ideas...

Interesting  ::)

It could be a squirrel or crow, it could even be  magpies or even rats?

Keep us informed when or if you find the culprit  :wacko:

Do you have a dog?......Our egg thief is the dog around here lol!!

I can't ever put them down anywhere he can reach them as he'll happily gobble them up. I put three on the edge of the 2 foot high plant pot not long ago (but inside it on the soil iyswim?) by the outside water tap and he snaffled them all when I took the chooks water round he must have been watching them licking his lips and hoping I'd be daft enough to leave them and he was right!  :mad:

Thanks for your suggestions. I think it is either a crow or a magpie - there have been territorial wars in the back garden with magpies mobbing a crow fledgling and then getting bombed out of the sky by the adult crow - quite exciting to watch.
I'm getting my husband to make me some new and inviting nest boxes with access only from inside the hen house.
Now all I have to do is persuade the girls to lay in the places that they're supposed to lay in...
