Anyone got their Runners in yet?
« on: May 02, 2012, 21:08 »
I made a sowing of half of our runner beans about 10 days ago and i notice today that the first one is just pushing through. Im always wary of the timing of runners, but the plan is to keep them in root trainers in the greenhouse for a few weeks before hardening them off, and planting out late may. Cant put it off forever i guess.

Just planted 18 plants out today, they are about 8" tall, sowed in early April, they were under a plastice cover in the garden since beginning, it took quite long for them to germinate. Now they are too big for the paper roll, I planted them under cover and hope they can survive this coming Saturday. .....I will put a seed next to each plant, in case they could not make it.

The first of mine is just sticking a leaf up from the modules I sowed them in.

Climbing French beans doing the same.... slowly.

I haven't sown mine yet! Will sow at the weekend. I hate it when they get too tall!

Sowed my runners a couple of weeks back and they are about 3 inches high now. Sowed dwarf French beans about 10 days ago and they are just coming through. Speed them all in the greenhouse.

Not putting them out yet though as we have some cold nights coming up this weekend.

I never sow my runners until the end of April as I did once, and they got so long before it was safe for them outside, they got all tangled up.

But I sowed mine today. 41 White Lady, and 25 saved seeds from last year.  Some are Enorma and some are Scarlet Emperor.  I sow them in 3" pots in the greenhouse and plant out near the end of May.

Like GrannieAnnie, now is the time I would sow my runners to go in the greenhouse.  But, boo hoo, I am greenhouseless due to a bad attack of wind. ::)  My beloved Boston dwarf French beans will be sown direct mid-may.

Will sow mine in paper pots before the end of the week - runners are easily killed by frost and are also one of the great sulkers and will just sit there gloomily doing nothing for weeks on end if it's too cold for them outside, so I'll be aiming to plant out at the end of May, but possibly later if it's still cold and miserable.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
