Has anyone had success in growing Romanesco?
« on: April 24, 2012, 20:23 »
Evening All,

Have any of you had good results growing Romanesco? l seem to be able to get the plants to grow well but they never produce a nice large head, just tiny little things .
that what l have tried was tasty but not enough.

Silky :D :D :D

This is my first year growing them, so no results yet as they're still small seedlings. :)

If you mean those lime green caulis, then yes they grew very well year before last. Thye need good firm grouns, a decent feed of BFB part of the way through the season and there they are  :D

Butterflies like laying eggs on them though and our very first one had an extra helping of matching caterpillars, which were all lying neatly along the stems within the head

You have been warned

the Romanesco plants I grew (2009) got caterpillared and by autumn looked very pathetic (it was a bad year - swedes, broccoli, calabrese, cabbage  :()  I abandoned them (because of other jobs to do) and so glad I did because in late spring the following year they revived and produced lovely big heads (about 6-7 in diameter), and best of all, bug free.

They taste nothing like cauliflower but despite their shape are more like calabrese if not better  :D  I'm definitely growing some this year

im growing some for the first time this year.i think alot of sucess for brassicas depends on getting a few basic principles right.ground manured in the autumn, limed in spring time, plants firmed in well, correct spacing of plants, adequate protection from pests, keep weed free ,water in dry spells, give occasionall feed and you should have good results. :)

My first time with these as well, have bought a few of them from the supermarket and always been impresses so though I would give them a go. I was going to direct sow them into the bed outside but the weather is terrible, nothing is growing for me at the moment so I am going to start them off today in an unheated propagator in the house, I was planning on then potting them on and putting them in the greenhouse for a while to really get going before I shove them outside :)

Fingers crossed....

I grew them last year and they were very late to make any heads. Luckily the first part of winter was very mild so they were usuable  ;)

I tried these last year and found them late to bulk up and the white fly loved them.  Still worth a second try
