Those poor onions
« on: April 18, 2012, 20:52 »
At the weekend I carefully planted out my seed grown onions -- never grown onions from seed before, 'cept spring onions

Prepared the bed, planted them with due reverence, and now, now they are getting battered by massive rainfall every day

I just hope they can swim

Look on the brightside .......this means that the hose pipe ban will be lifted in November instead of December  :tongue2:

Same here - we've had hailstones and a couple of frosty nights since they went in - I confess they've got a cheap cloche over them til the mad weather changes - the rest (yes, all the seeds lived ) are still in the cold frame, but they desperately need out of their pots  :(

I know it's sad.....Had my plot under a week and rain has stopped everything.  Really sad as have onions that need to get out of their pots into the ground but rain has prevented the bed being prepared for them and the weatherman thinks it's going to be like this for a while....fingers crossed can get to the plot soon.

Mine are going out today Sunny  :)  The red ones you saw when you came round, that were a bit further ahead.  May find a cloche for them for a week or 2  :)

I have some seed grown onions in trays at home - they took a while to germinate but they're up now. But I'm not sure when I should plant them out and how big they should be when this happens - the ones I have still seem pretty small (shoots are maybe a couple of mm thick) - do they need to go out asap or can I leave them a bit longer?

I'm leaving mine to grow a bit bigger, before they have to face the weather  ::)

Mine are OK  :D :D :D :D

Some of the leaves are not standing up straight, but the new ones will, I am sure.

At least I didn't have to water them

'You've done it proper this year then, them onions'

mine are still in trays :( they're about 3 or 4 inches tall.

they were in some poor compost made of twigs and bits and i don't think it helped them grow properly. took them all out and struggled to put them individually back into the tray in new finer compost. only solution i had was group them together in packs of 6. so far they all look healthy but i'm not sure if grouping them together was good idea or not. any ideas?
