what are winter greens?
« on: April 13, 2012, 17:38 »
My daughter has recently been buying and eating 'winter greens' so I'm thinking of growing some this year. What are they and does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Spring cabbage, such as "April" cut fairly early, is what you'll find in the shops as spring greens.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Kale is the best known,  sometimes called Borecole.    Normally they are types of brassica that can stand out in the winterwithout too much damage.   My two favourites are Nero de Toscana and Kailaan (Chinese Broccoli).

The Organic Gardening Catalogue has about 7 varieties.   ::)     Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I don't care ! ::)

The phrase used was Winter greens, not Spring greens.        Cheers,    Tony.

These 2 pages may help

http://www.realseeds.co.uk/wintersowing.htm

http://www.which.co.uk/home-and-garden/garden/guides/grow-your-own-winter-salad/the-best-winter-salad-leaves/

I am going to grow Komatsuna, winter purslane, pak choi and green in the snow oriental mustard as well as Nero de Toscana.

Have you got a copy of Joy Larkcoms grow your own vegetables; I am finding it invaluable

Opened my eyes, I didn't know you could grow salads over the winter, that's great, its good to have at least something over the winter months, I thought as about September October, that was it close down the allotment for 3 or 4 months, tbh I thought it was just spuds and that was it!!

I was just browsing and found a book called "How to Grow Winter Vegetables" by Charles Dowding. It seems to get good reviews so it might also be helpful.

I just had a google (like you do) and found this site, only had a quick scan of it, but looks quite informative, I'm probably teaching you all how to suck eggs here, but its all new to me,

No that is really useful, Thank you.

Although I have done a lot of reading and have a plan all drawn out I HAVE NOT YET DONE THIS.

Like you I am really excited about it and kicking myself that the ground has been empty all winter.

I have an 8x4 foot polytunnel on a raised bed which after the peppers have finished is going to be planted with komatsuna, winter purslane, Pak choi and Green in the snow. I will probably start them in modules so they are ready to go in. I also have 2 uncovered raised beds where I intend to grow Kale and leeks which I will also start in modules.

Well that is the plan at the moment but plenty of time to change it a few times  ::)

I also grow perpetual spinach in the tunnel over the winter for the chickens.  And picked carefully it lasted all through the winter!  Not a salad I know, but it was never touched by frost.
