Spring greens
« on: May 04, 2013, 18:28 »
I planted a few spring greens in the Autumn that I was given, not sure what they were, but now they're just about ready to eat I find them not to my liking, a bit too floppy and weak, a bit like some of those insipid round lettuce ... rather disappointing. Is there a variety I could plant this year that would give me a crisper leaf ? Is it just a case of planting some straight forward Winter cabbages that carry through to Spring ? I'm not asking for miracles and a prime headed cabbage, just something a bit more pleasing.

Thanks for the replies. I've just looked up the Durham early and that's the one for me.

Outside of my favourite curly kale that I have never had a problem with in my garden, decent crops of brassicas are a learning curve up on the allotment.
Last year I tried the greyhound as a Summer cabbage as per their description and loved the taste and texture, with a sort of reasonable crop. I didn't know one could sow them to over Winter, so will be trying that out along with the Durham. Thanks for that. Maybe the penny is just beginning to drop with me what is possible with brassicas... as once established they do seem to be reasonably hardy, certainly for this neck of the woods.
