Tell me I shouldn't buy these tomorrow...
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:36 »
I've seen some Dwarf fruit Trees - Apple, Pear, Plum or Cherry coming up on the Lidl websie tomorrow (am I allowed to link?).  Thing is I really want a plum or a pear tree in a pot (we rent out house so I'm told there's little point in spending money on one to go in the garden).

There are 3 apple trees in the garden, 2 of which did really well last year, 1 (despite tonnes of blossom only had a handful of apples) there was a 4th, but this did absolutly nothing and eventualy fell over last year is some strong wing  it was rather rotten inside.  We only moved in March of last year, so I don't know how long it had been dead for.

I wanted to put a conference pear in where, more or less, the apple tree had fallen down (assuming as it was a replacement we wouldn't need landlord permission), according the the contract we vitually need permission to breath!

Anyhow he did say that I could have a tree in a pot as I could take it with me when and if we have to move (that's the thing with renting, you only sign a years contract, you never know if you'll be asked to leave a the end of the contract!).

Perhaps I should go to a specialist place instead to be assured of root stock, but on looking they do seem very expensive!

Anyhow, I've rambled long enough...

Hannah :)

planting a tree directly where one has died could give you more problems unless you know what it died off. So buying dwarf ones in pots sounds good to me  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I recently bought fruit trees from a tv shopping channel, bid tv.  They were advertised as professional quality on dwarfing rootstock and suitable for container growing.  I was sceptical, but they are larger, nicely shaped and far and above the quality of any I've seen in Lidl.  With postage I got  an apple, plum and pear for £30, which is the cost of one tree in our local nursery.  They do others and also have a website.
Cheese makes everything better.

Hum... I've just looked up this offer, it does look good and all my favourite fruits!  Need to cost it up though with the cost of pots and compost etc... Will have to think about where they can go.  I do avoid delivery sometimes as I'm not at home to sign for them...
