Advice for watering while away for 9 days.
« on: April 06, 2012, 08:31 »
We are away for 9 days tomorrow and I've got a few tomato and pepper plants that were started from seed in February.  I am planning to bring them in the house while away but need some advice on watering, will they be ok if they are just watered before We go? Or should I get someone to pop in and water?

You've only one option unless you want to come back to dead plants!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

How about some capilliary matting... have used this before with success. The plants can soak up what they need without getting waterlogged. However, it would be safer if someone could come in and water for you.

put them in a tray of water!

If left in a tray of water for 9 days they could drown.  Capillary matting

Even if they do keel over while you are away, you still have plenty of time to sow some more.

If you've got enough seeds you could always sow some just before you go away and pop them in a propogator, they should be up and waiting for you when you return.

Thanks for all the replies guys, in the end I brought them inside and some friends popped in and watered them.  Whatever they did worked really well, most of them had grown twice the size in 9 days.  :)

Pleased your plants were okay Andy!

I was worried about mine, as too many to bring indoors, so I put everything in my bubble wrapped greenhouse, watered well Sunday evening and covered everything loosely with fleece.  Was worred about the heat in there is it got too hot, so shut door, but opened windown a little to let out any hot air, but tied the bubble wrap closed a bit to stop any frost if there was any getting in.

Good job it wasn't too hot while we were away as everything is fine, and like you said, doubled in size!!!

great to hear GrannieAnnie, in some ways you feel responsible for them.  I know it's easy to plant new seads but that's not the point.

Indeed!  ;)

When I transplanted some tom seedlings last week.  there was one that I knew hadn't taken kindly, I think it was too small.

I threw it away, but felt really guilty about it!
