Potato Feed
« on: March 28, 2012, 08:41 »
Having now planted out my potatoes is there a good recommended feed that I can give them during the growing season? I知 guessing what I can give to potatoes I can also give to brassicas?

Edited to correct a few typo re search purposes

Are then in open soil or in tubs?

Having well manured/fed my spuds grown in open ground, that's it for the season for me.

If growing in tubs, the compost will run out of nutrients and will need feeding.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I only acquired the allotment 3 weeks ago. After a lot of weeding and digging I planted my potatoes last week. To date the ground hasn稚 been manured or fed.

Looks like chicken manure pellets, dried blood or bone meal. Can I add this to the top of the soil now and water it in, or wait until the greenery starts to show?

The article says it needs the fertiliser to form the haulms, so I'd add it before the plant tries to grow them. :)

OK. I'm off to buy a fish, blood and bone feed so that I can start watering the soil this evening.

An interesting topic, I would like to ask just where do you place the manure/growmore over the complete bed or just around where you intend to plant the seed?  It seems to me a waste of valuable manure resource to cover the whole bed.

If you work the fertiliser into the soil a bit you should not need to water it in. Remember that we are trying to save water.

The boffins say that fertilizer is most efficient for potatoes if it is a couple of inches underneath the seed. i.e. open up your furrow and work it into the bottom.

One approach is t open your furrow and sprinkle the fertilizer over the sides. As the soil is pulled in the fertilizer will be concentrated around the seed but not in close contact with it.

I dig a trench, put down the manure, then a layer of soil & cover.

I don't bother doing this with the earlies as I'm only after small spuds anyway.
