Tomatoes - how are they looking pic attached
« on: March 27, 2012, 21:20 »
Hi there

These large ones are from the feb sowing I made, it was more of an experiment and first ever attempt at sowing.  Should I start removing side shoots or feeding yet?  I understood feeding a high potash starts once bearing fruit, but at same time compost nutrients only last a few weeks?.  There is little side shoots too. (gardeners delight)

The others were sown more recently (moneymaker)

Think I would be potting on the larger plants into slightly bigger pots and planting as deep as possible.  Also take off the side shoots whilst still small.  They do look rather healthy

I am assuming you have a greenhouse to eventually plant them up in, If so, i would be putting them in there during the day in this weather as they are a little bit drawn but look healthy enough. As said before, pot them up as deep as you can. I would also attempt to divide the two that are in the big pot because if they are rooting well they will be really tangled up and you will have a hard time seperating them without one or both of them dying

I have a greenhouse at the allotment but cant get there everyday yet. so just sticking to windowsill at min.  Have a coldframe though that is bubblewrapped?  Good idea on the two together, thanks.

Some may disagree but while the weather is around the high teens-20 degrees, i think they will be better in the coldframe during the day if they will fit.

You don't need to feed until they flower and the first fruit sets

Yes - pot them on - as deep as you can won't hurt.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Try letting a couple of the Gardeners Delight grow as a bush without nipping out side shoots. I did it last year and had good results. I also tried it with a moneymaker and it cropped really heavilly, but with smaller fruit.

Planted my toms far too early and I'm worried that they're now looking a bit spindly. Gardeners Delight. Keeping them on the windowsill for at least another month. Or should I give up and try again?

I'd pot into a bigger pot, burying the stem quite deeply.

Might be worth starting off some more in a couple of weeks or so, just as backup though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

On my "must grow" list, tomatoes are hot on the heels of peas. Even the "Finest" supermarket ones come nowhere near home grown ones for flavour.
