Which way to arrange beds?
« on: March 23, 2012, 00:18 »
I have aquired a load of roof joists and plan to install raised beds.

My present set up is 20 ft X 10 ft beds which are east/west so that the 10 ft rows run north/south.

If I have 4 ft wide beds and intend to plant everything "on the square" which way does the long axis of the beds want to be?

In my experience it doesn't make any difference - you still have to be careful where you plant the tall stuff  ;)

Hi Salmo
I agree with mumofstig it doesn't seem to make a lot ofdifference.
I have my beds arranged in letter E formations, so I have beds on both axis.
With a 10 x20 plot you could have a U formation with 1No 4x10ft and 2No 4x16ft beds, or an E formation but with 4 cross beds, 1No 4x20ft and 4No 4x6ft.
This cuts down a little on the paths and wood need but also lets you alter the size of the beds depending on what you are planting

North/south will maximise the sunlight, the rest is up to you. :)

I agree with ice,  North South orientation.
The memsahib said only this morning, if I didn't have anything planned, could I turn our FIVE raised beds through 90 degrees!    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Your U and E formations are very interesting. You seem to be good at fitting in beds. My whole plot is 40 ft X 20ft with the long side running east/west. The north west quarter is permanent crops. How would you organise raised beds on the rest?
