Raking in general fertiliser
« on: March 17, 2012, 18:23 »
Hi,

I keep reading that I have to rake fertiliser into plots a week or two before planting out.

The fertiliser I have mixes with water though, can't I just use a watering can?

Does raking it on refer to some sort of solid rather than liquid fertiliser?

Thanks :)

What fertiliser are you referring to?  It's not a tomato feed is it?

Raking in fertiliser usually refers to a powder / granules such as growmore or fish blood bone.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Suppose you have prepared an onion bed and the seedlings are ready for transplanting.
2 weeks beforehand you rake in fertiliizer which will remain near the surface where the young roots are. FBB takes longer than growmore, which takes longer than poultry manure. If you applied a liquid feed it would probably be lost (especially if there had been rain) and would be beyond the reach of the young roots.
I use liquid feeds on established plants (good exmple is tomato) Some liquid feeds can be applied via the leaves.

Well thanks for clearing that up.

I have a general fertiliser that is a powder but mixes with water, I bought that for potatoes. Is that appropriate?

I'll buy some FBB today for the carrots :)

If you look at gardening catalogues, many supply fertiliser specially for particular veg and flowers - it will make go go mad to have a different one for everything and, IMHO, a waste of money. Look at the gardening advice on here as to what things need most of these nutrients: nitrogen, potassium or potash.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I believe that liquid fertiliser won't remain in the soil for long; save it for once the plants (spuds etc) are growing.

FBB will be fine for general purpose use too.

Good advice but too late, I bought some FBB and some Growmore while I was at it - hey they were only £2 each :)

Cheers also Yorkie for answering the question I was about to ask until I just saw the post you wrote in the topic summary!
