broody in main coop
« on: March 09, 2012, 18:24 »
Well I have learned a lesson!  One of my Light Sussex bantams went broody so  I decided to let her sit on some eggs.  Unfortunately when I looked at my broody ark it needed some maintenance so I decided to leave her on eggs in the main coop.  Up to this morning she was doing great but when I opened up this morning she was in the next door nesting box and the eggs were cold.  She did go back on the clutch but I think she won't have any hatching out if any.  I should have waited until the broody ark was ready  :(
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

Hope that they have survived.  If not they may not have been viable eggs to start with and was why she moved nests.

I wouldn't give up on the eggs just yet, I let my broody sit on some eggs last year and the only welsummer egg I had rolled out of the nest and was cold, I put it back under her but was sure it definitely wouldn't hatch, of course it turned out to be the only one that did hatch  :D

You should cover her over so she can not get off and get on to another nest also another hen might have kicked her off so it could lay there they do that a lot

put her in a broody coop where she just has the one area for the eggs so she won't get confused. It is not too late to move her. and I have also had a hen who through no fault of her own was shut out from her eggs for many hours leaving the eggs to go cold. The majority of these eggs still hatched out ok  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.
