Has anyone had any experience of this ?

I could do with finding either some websites or books that deal with this topic, any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated

I've done horse chestnut up to big pot size, when we took it to the park and planted it.  also done a pine tree, seed was from France and it grew to about 40ft in 30 years.

Hazels have self seeded in the garden, as have plums.

I was thinking of trying to grow silver birch, alder, holly, blackthorn, and the like from collected seed.

Yep, holly is quite simple once it takes.

Dr H says plant Alder cuttings in autumn.

Birch - seed in cold frame in spring.
He suggests buying a blackthorn as Prunus spinosa.

I planted conkers, acorns and other tree seeds as part of a project at school and we got some to germinate. The horse chestnut and oak were the most successful and we transplanted them in the garden when they were over two feet tall. I left the school the next year so I don't know how they have fared since.

ive got four Oak saplings, 1year old, in deep pots (type garden centers sell fruit bushes in) just soil and compost and a bit of growmore. Apart from a weeding they get nothing other than rain. ok so they have been got by some pests but there going ok

the acorns i collected from the tree behind my mums house that i played in as a kid (its a mirical its still alive the way we treated it)

stick some seeds in and see what happens :D

We have a walnut tree, and I've dug up loads of little walnut trees which grow from walnuts the squirrels have buried all round the garden.
Oops a daisy!
