growing fig trees
« on: November 21, 2012, 10:09 »
Sitting looking out at the grey day my thoughts are turning to spring and new ideas that I can try.

Has anyone had any success with growing figs in containers as far north as Sheffield? If so what variety is best?

Brown Turkey is the standard although there is a variety called Brunswick that is said to be hardier.

Cultivation is usually by restricting the roots, prompts them to fruit earlier, but it is still a tree and so the container should be reasonable size.

As the container is often in the ground for figs but your post reads as if a normal above ground container I would suggest that for bad frosts you wrap the container. Suspect that hardy and the soil freezing are different.

They fruit every year for me in Glasgow outside in a south facing sheltered spot.

I have 2 figs, one in the ground, one in a big container.

I know i'm about as far south as you can get, but the one in the container is a pathetic thing compared to the one in the ground which fruits bootiful.

I'm going to give in to its whimpering and put in out of its misery, and plant it out. ::)

Mine in a pot survived the winter of 2010,although I'm not as far north as you my fig was in a pot in Doncaster before it came to me 6 years ago.
