What's still going well from last year then...
« on: February 29, 2012, 06:16 »
We still have the original 12 brussels, making gorgeous sprouts, about forty leeks, which are admittedly looking a bit sad, but are great for soup, or fried up, several parsnips still in the ground and are coming up as sweet as a nut, and the swede, although a little woody are fabulous grated with a little garlic, mayo and sultanas...

Can't stop them yet I'm afraid, I'll have to deal with the digging a bit quicker when they eventually all shuffle off...

Anybody else got stuff still working...?

Still harvesting leeks, brussels and cabbage.  PBS, just starting to harvest now and cauliflower should be heading up nicely next month.  Jerome is a wonderful cauliflower for overwinter growing, it produces lovely big curds during March and April.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

green curly kale, cabbages, leeks (just ate the last parsnips last night) red sprouts, carrots, german blue winter radish, spinach, lettuce in the cold minitunnel, caulis still to head up (but plants look good and are curling over in the middle) and mixed salad leaves back at home. oh yes, a few beetroot still OK too, and spring onions from last summer

Dug the last of my parsnips a couple of days ago, the leeks are still good and the Kale are still going.  In the unheated greenhouse the overwintering lettuce, Valor I think, is going well.

I've got a couple of savoys, and a dozen cauli's that should be ready in April - we'll see about that as they're still quite small ATM! Still got winter lettuce and chard in the polycarb greenhouse
and Japanese bunching onions in a tub in the garden.

Leeks and swede all used up now  :( Brussels were all blown :( and Kale never grew more than 6 ins tall  not sure what happened there  Not many overwinter onions made it either, shan't try those again  :(

So winter crops were a mix of good and bad this year.

Parsnips, carrots, swede, leeks, PSB, WSB, sprouts & cabbage.

Caulis in the ground, but not ready yet, a few leaves in the greenhouse.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Still got some parsnips, which are now starting to produce new shoots (good for locating them but it also means it's time to get them out!)

Some leeks left, but mainly ones which went to seed and those I planted close together in a trench which are therefore a bit small.

A few winter gem lettuces in the greenhouse - not exactly been feasting on them over the winter but looks like I could get something off them soon.  ::)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Just some leeks that look at bit sad but are still OK for eating. Roll on summer - I can just imagine the taste of a lovely fresh cucumber.

That's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question!)  ::)

All I can really say is that grown well they are mostly considerably larger than the supermarket versions, but other than that it depends on how many of you there are, and how often you intend to eat them.

We grew 5 rows of 8, 6" apart with rows about a foot apart, still got a few left. Most about 12-18" long and 3-4" at the crown
