Just found a chicken...is it male or female?
« on: February 26, 2012, 17:57 »
We have just found a very handsome bird wandering by the road. Assume it has escaped from a garden but can't work out where. Since it's now going dark we carried it home and have put it in the henhouse with our 3. It's a huge bird and I fear it may be a cockerel because of its size - I can't remember having ever had such a mighty specimen in our chook keeping career. It has no spurs and we were able to catch it easily, it didn't complain. Does this sound likely if it were male?
Or do I just have to wait until the crack of dawn to find out?

4.00am here.

Mind you, we've just put 24 cockerels in the freezer so with only 5 left dawn is a very tame affair now :D

I wouldn't have thought it a good idea to put a bird in with your hens when you don't know where it has come from and what it might be carrying (lice, disease).

It would be fine overnight in a box with ventilation or a pet carrier.  Better safe than sorry.  :)

If you put it in with your other hens and there wasn't a big fight...I'm inclined to think it's a boy!
