Earth worms... Yes or No..
« on: February 17, 2012, 19:55 »
Hi everbody, as I have spare land, now and again I go and dig up earth worms for the hens. This land hasn,t been cultivated for years so is very Organic. Yet on the internet I hear conflicting reports about feeding hens worms. "Earth worms give your hens worms" then "Earthworms are very nutritious" who is right...Aden..

Hi Aden- I wouldn't know for certain but I think they would love the worms! As long as you treat your chooks every 3-6 months with a course of Flubenvet as a preventative I'm sure they will be fine!

Ho yes they go bananas for them, but I,m trying to be organic as possible so prevention rather than cure is tops.

I may be wrong but I thought I'd read that slugs are more of a potential problem regarding worms.

Free range hens naturally look for worms, slugs, spiders, bugs, woodlice and all sorts of other critters... In there natural environment this is what they would eat, Anything they didn't like they wouldn't eat to be fair....

As long as you regular give worming treatment and say apple cider vinegar to promote good internal digestion / parasite control then you should be ok. HTH?

just worm regularly with flubenvet which is proven to work against all internal worms  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Pick up a spade - they'll be all over you! Of course you can't dig because they get their heads under the spade. Earth worms are not like parasitic worms and won't cause problems; most internal parasites are left on the surface of grass or earth and this stage is too small to see. Whether you want to see a live creature being eaten is a different matter.

And don't even think of trying to use a garden fork because they stick their heads between the tines to see who can get the worms first.  :nowink:

Yes, using a fork or spade while the hens are out is not recommended. They go berserk when they see me with the bucket I collect the worms in. Clever or what..

Plus when you are trying to dig a hole they keep filling it in ::)
and if you plant anything they pull it up faster than you can plant
If God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of food
