Hi all

Desperate for advice. I've got 8 chicks one week old. I've just cleaned one of their vents as it was completely clogged with poop. i've put it back in (its by far the smallest of the chicks) and the others have started pecking at the tiny scab that was on its rear. I haven't a clue what to do please can anyone advise?

I'm sure someone will be along soon who Knows much more that me, but they all seem to recommend spraying with a special purple spray as it's the red they go for.Not sure what it,s called though. Try looking on some of the other chicken threads.

You are looking for gentian violet

however at such a young age chicks will peck at everything, so purple spray might just exacerbate the problem.

I would pen off the chick in the brooder for a day or two (obviously with food and water and access to the warm part).

With chicks you need to check the vets of each one every day.  Pasting up (which is what it is called wwhen the vent gets clogged) can kill if the vent isn't cleared.

Pasting up is usually caused by the chicks getting a chill, so be careful to ensure that the heat lamp is low enough, and that there are no draughts can get into the brooder.

Some makes are called simply purple spray. Agree Casey re treatment.
