Dormant strawberries
« on: February 03, 2012, 19:42 »
Hello!
In my excitement to get growing I decided to order some strawberry plants.  The website said they would be dormant so I wasn't expecting much.

So they arrived today, all 40 of them, and they are all green (and some have little flowers  :blink:) with bare roots.  What do I do with them?  Options are...

-Plant out (once the ground defrosts, possibly monday?)- I could cover with fleece if required
-Plant into pots in the heated greenhouse (time consuming for 40 of them!)
-Leave bare rooted in the cool conservatory and wait for it to warm up

Or something else?

Thanks in advance  ::)

I would plant up in pots and place in a cold greenhouse or cold frame then plant out as they start to sow some new growth. Maybe pot on a few in larger pots and keep protected for an earlier crop.

I'm on something else.

1. heal in somewhere not frozen if available(near heating flu, sunny spot)

2. leave in water in a cold room for the cold week until thaws

If freezing lingers too much, still can pot up.

My plants arrived from T&M late last year  :ohmy: and I just stuffed them in troughs in the greenhouse. They seem to be happy enough although I know I'm not going to get anywhere near the 24 I ordered... :(

I had a load delivered a couple of years ago.  A bit laborious, but I initially heeled them in to large pots/troughs in my cold greenhouse, then bit by bit planted them up individually into pots, and by mid spring they were fantastic - still in cold greenhouse - I then put them outside.

Hmmm, thanks for the thoughts everyone!  I think I will heel them into the cold frames and put the covers on.  I'll then move them to the sunnier raised beds when it has warmed up a bit :-)
