Dormant fruit trees
« on: May 07, 2012, 19:39 »
I bought another five bare root fruit trees this year but two of them, a Red Haven Peach and an Opal Plum have yet to produce a leaf!
I have had a little scratch at the stem and it is green below the bark on both of them.
Is there anything I can do to give them a boost into growth? or is it just waiting for nature?
Or is it a case of, if they haven't started yet they never will?

It is a bit late for bare rooted trees tbh, so give them another couple of weeks. If there is no sign of life then, I would contact your supplier

I have had them for over a month now and all of the others are ok, I just wondered if those varieties were later than most or if I had a problem?

They should be in leaf by now

I had three trees that did not 'take' last spring (black cherry, braeburn apple and green gage) and the nursery replaced them with bare root stock in the autumn.

The roots had been cut back very hard indeed.

I had to be very persistent before there was an agreement reached that replacement would be required

Lawrence, as I only got my plot a few months ago I have planted several bare root trees and they are all at different stages of bloom! None is in full leaf and some have only swollen buds, where I can tell the leaf will come. I have a Bramley apple I thought was dead, but actually noticed the leaves just this morning. They are all different trees and are from several suppliers, so I just wonder whether the weather has affected them and they are just a bit slow. Mine were planted when we had the lovely weather in March and of course it changed drastically soon after. I wonder whether those planted earlier in the year are more advanced.

I got my trees from Aldi...
At least I am not on my own.
I had to get them to replace a plum tree from last year which died, although that one had leaves when I bought it but they just shrivelled up, fell off and never came back.

I was given an Opal as a gift two years ago as a leaving gift at work. It was in full bloom at the time, however once planted the blosom and leaves fell off and nothing else happened that year neither did it produce anything last year - no leaves, buds nothing.  This year it is showing signs of life with a few small buds and leaves.
Is Opal a tempermental variety?

My Red Haven from Lidl has been in leaf for sometime now so they will grow. It was in a conservatory before planting out and has been out for a while now, but I be worried if it wasn't out by now.

With my science hat on I would say it's probably due to lack of chilling. Most trees require exposure to a certain number of days below a specific temperature to promote bud burst the following spring. If the tissue is still alive, I think you just need to sit and wait.

Also, if the wholesale nursery growing the trees for Lidl used chemical defoliants on the young plants befor lifting them (as most growers of this type of nursery stock do)  that may also delay bud burst.

My peach tree I planted in Feb is just showing a few buds ,they've just come in the last 4or 5 days.
My Opal plum and cherry planted at the same time have been in leaf for ages.
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)
