Brassica bed prep
« on: January 30, 2012, 13:17 »
Hi Guys

I dug over what will be this years brassica bed in autum, left it in large clods as i have pretty sticky clay. It is now all gorgeous and crumbly (i got so excited about it the other day when i smaked a bit with the back of the spade and it juts crumbled down :D) but I am wondering what to do next - do i lightly fork it over then tread it all down again to make it nice and firm or should i leave it as is and just put up with a lumpy looking bed? Any advise/experience as aloways greatly received.

thanks!
Kate

At this time of year I should leave it lumpy so the birds can get as many bugs as possible.    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Ditto what Klefti said but when you come to plant them just rake the bed flat and firmly heel the plants in.
There is no need to compact the whole bed, just where the plants are.

Waves to totalnovice from another clay patch.

My brassicas improved no end with adding lime to sweeten the soil. We sell it down the gardeners association as magnesium lime and the local garden centre sells it as acidity regulator (there's a £6 price difference due to their pretty packaging).

I also found that the more compost I have added the better the soil has become for everything including brassicas. Being a bit risk averse and knowing that people have had problems with chemicals in manure, I have been compost making like heck over the past few years.

Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a rake over before i plant anything up, and give it a good heel in!
