They don't look like rat holes

The rat holes we have are completely smooth around the edges

They look like rabbit digs to me -- starting off burrows

Yep, I agree. I've got a rabbit warren at the bottom of my garden, and if I could find the camera I'd post a few piccies of their digs and holes that look exactly like that.

They look suspicously like a mole, don't let the absence of mounds fool you.

Well, yes, if we see these kind of roundish holes(burrows) of different sizes, then rabbits are very likely. Badgers also would have a toilet nearby. ;)

I do know nothing about rats' burrowing habits though.

Far too big for rats ....... I think it's rabbits. As far as I know rats don't burrow into open groud; they like plenty of cover.

Thanks everyone for you responses I feel a lot better know that it may not be rats. DH and I have decided to pack the holes with soil and place a heavy stone on each hole hoping no more holes pop up. Does that sound silly?

Never mind that. Cruel to animals, that's what it sounds like. Get out a professional. Pest control. The council should have them or you can go private if you like and might get some rabbits, too.

Another vote for rabbits and I don't think your plan will work..

Really the only way to keep rabbits out is wire. If  you stop holes while the rabbits are down there, they'll dig their way out somewhere else. If they're not down there, they'll just dig a new one right next to it unless you keep them out of that area. And if you are of a mind to try exterminating them, if you've got a big local population it'll be a drop in the ocean. I've got loads round me but they never bother my growing areas because I keep them out with wire.

Same here shokky

One of our tenancy agreements is that plots are fenced against rabbits. The site bounds farmland and in the evenings here are masses around --- outside plots

My advice woodhousemoor would be to fence the plot securely (including the gate). It is possible there are no rabbits down these holes, but a bit of a dig will tell you. They will soon move on if disturbed..... just keep the gate open while you are exploring.
