If the holes are only 3 to 4 ins across, aren't they a bit small for badgers?

I don't think so. Them big holes, 3-4 inches.

On Countrywatch, or whatever it's called, badger setts are easily 12" across.  I agree that 3-4", which is only 10cm across, appears far too small for badgers.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Even very small badgers

I still reckon they are rabbit holes

Yup, rabbit holes.  Badger holes are bigger and rat holes smaller.  Are there any droppings around the entrance?

I agree that badger sets are 12 inches but the usual signs of badgers are where they have been foraging for worms when they dig holes big enough to put their snout in. These holes are quite untidy and often contain the badgers latrine.

Rabbits on the other hand make shallow scrapes which are usually neat.

Rats are not wildlife. They are VERMIN . I hate them.

A feeding hole is easier to identify as it will be as deep as a badgers snout and a look at the droppings will give a definitive answer.

Rats and Rabbits tend to burrow against some thing a bank, shed or compost bin not directly into flat open ground sounds like Mice but at 3-4" holes its big Mice! It could be the hole openings are washing out with the rain and appearing larger.

must be rats as my Daleks were just invided by rats and the holes inside the bins were that size 3 inches. it will be easy to find out what are they by using a trap and a bit of cheese or bread dipped with sesame oil.

if you water down the holes they might jump out from other holes so you can see their true colours.

Here are a few pics of holes sorry for posting individually but can do all 3 at same time.

The smallest hole measures 4.5 inches while the biggest measures 11 inches.

No trace of poo or food bits around or near the holes.

Now that does look like burrows. Who is in them, I do not know.

By your 3-4 inch description of holes I was thinking of badgers' feeding holes. Those are not deep, just about snout size or so. They do not necessarily contain anything. Some do.

The damage to plants and what sort will help you with the answer. Rabbits you also would see, they aren't nocturnal.
