New asparagus bed
« on: January 25, 2012, 11:52 »
Hi, I've got 10 asparagus crowns arriving March time.  I need advice on on whether I need to make a raised bed for them. If so, what dimensions for 10 and what would I need to top up the raised bed i.e soil or compost.  I think that it would require a lot soil/compost. Compost would be easier to get I suppose.

Did you not consider what their needs would be before buying them?

Here's John's take on asparagus:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm about to plant some asparagus that I have grown from seed.  I'll be growing them on a mound as it is easier for me to construct than a raised bed.

My soil is very sandy and well draining so it will suit them well after I have added some humous.  If your soil is heavy you should incorporate some grit and sharp sand to improve the drainage.

Thanks for the advice. I only got the allotment at the beginning of the year. It is just bare earth. Like most people, I thought it best to order the plants and then get advice.
Are the roots deep? The soil is not clayey so I will just make a mound to grow them.
