Found a Rat in Daleks Compost Bin
« on: January 21, 2012, 12:42 »
I weekly throw my veg waste, fruits waste, nuts shells, tea bags etc in it, but found some holes on the surface of the composts. I pulled it up and re-filled the bin....suddenly, a rat run away.

my question is whether I can still use the compost, has it been infected by rat diseases?

Most of us have rats that run into compost bins from time to time.

I always use gloves when I am moving compost, so if you do this too, there will be no danger of catching any diseases from rat urine.

Have you put any cooked veg in the bin and is it dry inside?   I sit my dalek bins on wire mesh with very small holes to allow worms in and keep rats out.

I had this problem. As a home brewer I put all my spent malts and grains in the dalek. I just couldnt out why there was less compost than there was 6 months ago, then one day I saw a little tunnel with a little tail whipping down it.....

Pour plenty of cold water into it, give it a good stir as ratty could still be in there. They don't like a cold, wet bed

yes, thanks, I also googled and some said rat could spread weil disease and it is difficult to cure, one allotment holder suffered for years without a cure.

however, there is no mention of its effects to the soil,  but I figure I can still use the rest of compost for growing veg, because rat wee poo on soil anyway

I'm ok anyway, I own a Mainecoon cat (American breed of cat) and he's massive - they are the largest domestic cat.  I came out in the garden early one morning and found a dead rat.  He also brings home mice - note, mice and not mouse - he brings them in pairs :D

Just googled these, they are the size of a small Bobcat, you ought to train him to catch Muntjac. Weils is a nasty deseise to anglers have died from it in recent years.
