Hen or Cockerel - pics included
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:33 »
Im aware of some signs to look for to s.ex young birds but would like some clarification.
We have a rhode island red thats approx 20 weeks old, the neck feathers are pointed and flecked with black (with a green sheen), the tail feathers although not long are also predominantly black with green sheen.
I havent seen any sign of a spur/s growing (what age do they appear?)
There hasnt been any crowing either, again at what age do they start announcing their s.ex ?
The comb and wattles seem the same size/colour as the rest at the mo, but then none have really started growing.

Ive included photos of the hen/cock ;

Edited to correct spelling of "cockerel" for serach purposes

Hi Sideshoot; I'm fairly confident (95%) that's a pullet :)

Saddle hackles are usually a dead giveaway if the neck hackles are a bit suspect  *nods*

I am glad you posted the picture of your RIR as I thought they were all a lot darker in colour. Similar I thought to my black rocks and had more or less decided not to get some.
I will now be ordering some for collection in June. :lol:
