whats this vegetable called?

sorry i havent got a pic but i can describe it.it looks to me like a cross between a cauliflower & broccoli ,its a limey green colour and conical shaped.i think its a brassica but not sure ,ive never tasted it but it looks quite interesting .i would like to have a go at growing it along with some kolhrabi .can someone put me out of my misery and tell me what it is? :)

It sounds as though you are describing Romanesco cauliflower.

And very tasty they are too.

Just be careful that you don't let white butterflies (epecially the small white ones) anywhere near them.


Their caterpillars are an exact colour match for the stems inside the head, and the first one we so proudly harvested had added protein  :lol:

doh! thats it! major mind block there .thanks argyllie. :). do you treat it the same as a cauliflower then?

"Check" means growth stalling.

So don't leave them in modules to become root-bound, get them potted on quickly.

my children did & we still do call it dinosaur brocolli

It seems to be a cross between cauli and broccoli. You get a few main types.

Summer and winter hardy.

Free pollinated and F1.

All seem to be tough enough in our weather up till Christmas most years, in my experience.

A long growing season and a wonder of flavour.

Huge plants, mind. those varieties I have tried.
