Leeks still thin
« on: January 10, 2012, 16:31 »
The leeks I planted out last summer have hardly grown. They are still only about a cm in width  :(

What went wrong ?

They do not grow now, when the days lengthen more, in the spring.

Mine are like that.  They went in too late, weren't watered or fed properly.

As gobs says, they don't grow over winter.  They will start into growth again in the spring but will then flower so don't leave them for ages.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I suspect they might have needed a feed or two through the season? I did about 40 leeks and half a on the thin side and half are 1" or more, and I didn't liquid feed so I'm putting it down to patchy manure... next year I'll manure well and feed as well

Perhaps hoik them out, and cut out the flowering stem, which is not that nice.

Then steam the pieces - delicious...!

I did exactly that this evening - we've all faced this situation, so no worries!

I seem to have cracked it with Leek.

Start Musselburgh (avoid Bulgarian Giant as most seem to bolt) in the greenhouse in trays in March
Plant out into well-manured soil in early May
Feed nitrogenous fertiliser every couple of weeks
Keep well watered
Keep well weeded

Nearly all were at least 2" in diameter

I grew Bulgarian Giant............I didn't dib them in until the new potatoes came out, didn't water them at all.....................and none of them have bolted so far

More than one way to grow leeks  ;)

Absolutely.

Cat litter trays, dib in, leave.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ah - that as well. Mine seem to have grown through it.

AlaninCarlisle probably has that pleasure to come, unfortunately.

so did mine. It was only a few outside leaves that were damaged and I would probably have removed them anyway  :)

You were lucky -- mine had almost every leaf munched, but some new ones have grown in the middle
