Autum Bliss Rasp - Question on Rotation?
« on: January 06, 2012, 11:24 »
Hi aLl,

I ahve a rasp bed full of autim Bliss,  i have two questions for the panel!

1, Is there a time limit of how long a bed will stay productive, this summer will be the third year that I have rasps on the same plot, do i need to think about moving them?

2, Is there any benifit on digging up the older plants and replanting "new" off shoot plants, I remember hearing something about this, that the off shots are stronger plants?

They are usually left in the same place for many years, and as long as they are properly pruned, fed and weeded should continue to do well.

If they do start to decline in vigour and cropping, especially if they also start to show signs of virus infections (stunted canes, leaves changing appearance or colour) it's probably time to start again in a fresh patch of soil.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks , mine do tend to change leaf colour to a paler green/yello but it does not seem to affect their production.

I went to a talk last year and was told they would only last 5 years and then would need replacing.
However, most of the advice given in the talk has turned out to be incorrect or refuted by you guys, so I will assume 10 years at least

My uncle had his raspberries in the same place for ever

Each year he fed them with rotted manure and ashes from burning wood on his garden bonfire, and they just cropped heavily every year.

 No need to worry imho

My old next door neighbours when we lived in Kent had their raspberries in the same place for all the 22 years we lived there.  They always had lovely raspberries!
