Yet another Crop Rotation help & question
« on: July 20, 2010, 20:58 »
Hi Everyone,

I’m new and just starting our on the whole allotment thing, I am wanting to separate my plot into 11 raised beds and grow potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, peas, beans, cauliflower, broccoli, turnip, Swede, carrots, beetroot, parsnip, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, marrows, courgettes, onions, shallots, spring onions, leeks, spinach, sweetcorn and sweet potatoes, and lots of fruit (but this is seperate :))

My 11 raised beds are as follows

1 – Potatoes
2 – Potatoes
3 – Tomatoes, peppers, aubergine
4 – Peas and beans
5 – Cauliflower, broccoli, turnip and Swede
6 – Carrots
7 – Beetroot and parsnip
8 – Pumpkin and winter squash
9 – Summer squash, cucumber, marrow, courgette
10 – Onions, shallots, spring onion
11 – Leeks, spinach, sweetcorn and sweet potatoes.

Now with crop rotation raised beds 1 – 3 are potatoes and tomatoes, raised bed 4 is legumes, raised bed 5 is brassica and raised beds 6 & 7 are Root veg with raised beds 8 – 11 being in the other category.

Have I done this correctly as I’ve seen so much conflicting information! And if this is correct how on earth am I going to rotate them properly when I have only 1 raised bed in two categories??

Thank you in advance for any help offered and sorry for the long post.

Nessy  :)

where are you located?? If climate is right you can overlap a little if potatoes come out as earlies and peas beans etc clear early letting things in pots be planted a little late where they come out such as courgettes etc. I grow celery under sweet corn

IMO as long as you don't follow the potato group with more potatoes, or the brassicas with more of the same..........it won't really matter where or how you rotate the rest, just keep everything moving and you'll be fine ;)

Just rotate your potatoes around the plot [skipping bed 3 as you have put tomatoes in there]. The rest will follow round. Because you have an odd number of beds, it will all even out in the end with each beds eventually getting all the crops in the long run. I wouldn't stress about it to be honest :D

And keep your spuds away from your tomatoes (I'm guessing that because you have numbered them 1, 2 and 3, that you intend having them near each other)

Potatoes and tomatoes are both Solanacea family- if one gets blight- it will spread to the other and you'll lose both crops- so keep them far away from each other as possible to lessen the risk!!! :-)
