Dug out some more nettles then took the lot to the tip, think just one more trip to go then can go and build the compost bins and cold frame in the reclaimed space behind the shed
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Dug a new bed, having spent time digging, raking and sieving out the previous plot-holder's asparagus roots. This is at the front of the plot and I planted some cornflowers, as well as a further sowing of lettuce (lollo biondo) to replace the previous two that were accounted for by rain/cold/slugs/other predators.

Weeded out the spinach bed and found a surprising number of plants had survived, despite having most of the outer leves nibbled from them. Assume this is also slugs but grateful for anyone's thought on spinach-eaters. Anyway, it looks as if they might make it given warmth and tlc.

Cleared yet more of the previous plot holders rubbish/hoard! Turned over another patch of unworked ground. Some good hard clay to start breaking down. Began working through the old compost heap, removing live roots and throwing remains over the hard clay. Watered the plants in the greenhouse (loads more need potting on). Checked pumpkins planted under the coldframe yesterday. Still trying to harden stuff off to plant this weekend, especially want to get the beans, peas and french sorrel out. Spent two hours weeding a raised bed that was full of couch grass. Sowed more sweetcorn and bulls blood when I got home.

not on the plot but I picked up 40 whole paving slabs, another 8 half slabs and a few broken ones, along with some edging strips, fully loaded both the car and trailer weight wise, just about  managed it and spent a few hours  this afternoon cleaning the old cement off the backs and sides, patio laying over the next few days.

Finally got to the plot about 12>30 & decided I would have a bonfire(only allowed tues & thurs 9-5). So got that going then planted out my very late shallots that I found in the shed about 3 weeks ago & planted in to modules, tended the fire, then planted Picasso spuds, 6 1/2 short rows. Then I was offered some brassica plants so I had a tray of cauli's & put 9 in & some round cabbage & put 9 of them in. Sorted the fire out, raked hot embers onto some couch grass & mares tail that was growing on that bed, & scraped the last unburnt roots & wood in to the incinerator bin, tidied up & came home very tired but pleasesed at 7 pm.

got the cabbage, brussels and kale in. Put enough netting over them to keep off a flock of angry pigeons.

Packed kids, picnic and potty and then picked up some compost from the GC before venturing to the plot.

We planted:

-calendula
-marigolds

Potted on various tomatoes, aubergines, squashes and peppers in the greenhouse.

Got brave and planted out a couple of courgettes under large cut off water bottles.

Managed to keep the children busy with filling empty 2L coca cola bottles from the water butt then adding drip watering lids to them for the tomatoes.

Exchanged a few pleasantries with plot neighbours and agreed the weather was TOO COLD!  Then went home!

Although not strictly at the lotty, I have learned of a huuuge pile of leaves that have been collected from the grounds at work for 20 years.  I been given permission to take as much leaf mould as I want. So yesterday it was the first 4 sacks of mould transported back. Perfect tiring in readiness for celery and celeriac bed.
During this week I have:

Slug pelleted the plot.
Started hardening cucumbers and squashes.
Moved home produced melon seedlings to ploytunnel.
Planted calabrese.
Potted on PSB.
MOVED trailing lobelia and petunias outside to harden off.
Thinned carrots and watered soil with onion water.
Planted french beans under cloche
Strawed up strawberries.
Prepared planting areas for squash and outside melons.
Built arch from hazel growing wild.
Hoed allium bed.
Put up cd scarers.
Then the best job of all:
Sat back, had a brew and thought - I love my allotment!

its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

Hi all finally decided to put out some runner beans and climbing borlotti.
My neighbour reckons you don't get frost after the 17th May....hope he is right!
Have surrounded the bed with plastic though.
Also had a quick run round the plot with my electric strimmer given the cost of petrol I am starting to wonder if it's cheaper than using my petrol one. (Certainly qucker to start!)

Cheers HH
